I feel like part of the 80s has died.

Express Clothing Store filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of one store in New Hampshire and three in Massachusetts. Here are the four listed in the presentation:

  • ADDRESS: 2 Common Space Ct H-40, North Conway, NH
  • ADDRESS: 20-36 District Ave, Dorchester, MA
  • ADDRESS: 109 Newbury St, Boston, MA
  • ADDRESS: 200 N Dartmouth Mall, North Dartmouth, MA

According to Marketwatch.com, there will be a “substantial number” of employee layoffs.

Not all Express locations in New England are on the list, which is good news. Manchester, Salem and Nashua, New Hampshire, are not on the list. Neither did Kittery, Maine.

Why are these stores closing?

Well, obviously it all comes down to money, but why don’t they make it? I can speculate that they have very nice clothes that were never out of my price range. Maybe people just don’t dress up anymore?

Express started in 1980

I feel like Express was a big part of my experience in the ’80s here in New Hampshire. When I was a teenager, there was a cool new clothing store in the Pheasant Lane shopping center called “Express” and I loved it. The bold colors, shoulder pads, and selection were incredible. I was a regular customer. It seems like we’re hearing about closures everywhere, but this one really hurts. The Pheasant Lane Mall Express, by the way, is not on the list of closures.

I’m not one of those who buy clothes online. Maybe that’s where everyone is going these days, but I’m not that person. Where do you go these days to buy clothes that are a little bit fancy? I’m not the sweats type (really never). I like to wear nice clothes. Macy’s was another good bet for finding nice clothes, but it looks like they’re in danger too.

Have you ever shopped at Express?
