DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) – Two bills will be signed into Michigan Law during the NFL Draft in Detroit on Saturday.

After House bills 5527 and 5528 Passed by the Senate earlier this week and won House approval on Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is ready to sign them into law. The bills “will require more comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans in schools and will require plans for school athletic facilities, at school events, and add a training requirement for athletic trainers,” according to the American Heart Association.

Cardiac emergency response plans outline steps aimed at reducing deaths caused by cardiac arrests. It is particularly important to have them in schools, the AHA said.

The bills will be signed at a news conference at Detroit’s Corner Ballpark at 11 a.m. Saturday. Spokespeople for the NFL, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed on the field in January 2023, and the executive director of the American Heart Association will be present.
