CAIRO, IL. (WSIL) — Two sites in southern Illinois have been added to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced that the Allison family home site and smuggling camp, both in Cairo, are now on that list.

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom aims to preserve the history of resistance to slavery.

There are more than 700 locations in 39 states.

Governor Pritzker says the inclusion of these sites “ensures that this history is preserved as a reminder of our past and honored as a lesson for our future.”
